Chicago Acapella HerVoice Call for Scores Prize Winner, 2024

This piece is meant to act as a dialogue between an individual reader (the soloist) and this often-quoted
passage describing love from the Bible, with the chorus acting as that text, its wisdom becoming clearer over the course
of the piece, until it is finally distilled in the last sentence. I aimed to develop an arc that is also reflected in dynamic
rhythmic and harmonic movement, creating an ebb and flow akin to having a conversation while taking a long walk. The improvisational components also add to a sense of creation within the piece, which I hope reflects the generative
nature of love. Ideally, each time this piece is performed, it will be slightly different, adjusting to the needs of choir
members and audiences in real time to collaboratively develop the most healing force possible at that moment, in line
with longstanding tradition of Black American music.

Original text by Devon Gates, inspired by 1 Corinthians 13 (Bible passage)
